Comics, Characters, and Covers
Original Character Tournaments
The following works are samples of character designs, comic book covers, and comic pages from a variety of Original Character Tournaments (OCTs) that I have participated in. OCTs are collaborative art projects in which artists design original characters (OCs), and are matched up in a tournament bracket to create comics featuring both their own and their opponent’s OCs. These OCTs generally have their own unique themes, premises, and challenges that the OCs and subsequent comics must adhere to.
The Greens Knight
A hard-headed knight and his plucky squire, on a quest to save their prince from an alternate dimension.
Created for the Black Market Brawl 2 OCT, in which competitors sought a mystical, wish-granting lake in an fantasy setting.
Peri Von Winkle
A magical girl drag queen hard-shelled chocolate candy with a foul mouth and a penchant for ultra-violence.
Created for the Goku 2 OCT, in which competitors needed to base their characters (the titular ‘Goku’s’) on existing IPs, franchises, and/or brands.
Ellie Wake
A smarmy webcomic artist trapped in their own creation.
Created for the Goku Royale 3.33 OCT, in which competitors needed to base their characters (the titular ‘Goku’s’) on existing IPs, franchises, and/or brands.
Zorro 2526
A classic swashbuckler brought into the far future, then shunted into a chaotic alternate dimension.
Created for the GOKU 4: DESTROY ALL GOKUS MELEE OCT, in which competitors needed to base their characters (the titular ‘Goku’s’) on existing IPs, franchises, and/or brands.
Lady Lucille Lorraine Vanderstern III
A callback to the iconic Gibson Girls, though this one’s of noble stock, rather than an all-American.
Created for The Editorial OCT, in which competitors could only produce one-panel ‘editorial’ style comics themed around a specific provided word or phrase.
Netta
A sharpshooting mercenary with a terrible headache that ends up making pact with a big magical tree.
Prior designs adapted for the War for Rayuba OCT, based on the webcomic Kill Six Billion Demons by Tom Bloom. Artists competed in a massive grand strategy game where territory was won and lost through drawing comics.
